Having your car break down in heavy traffic can be a nightmare, and when it happens drivers stop the car, and attempt to fix the problem on the spot. AAA's Lon Anderson says getting out of your car can be extremely dangerous, taking a minor problem and turning it into a fatal accident. The Insurance Information Institute says to get the car to a safe place before getting out, even if this means destroying the tire, the rim, or the wheel. If the car is too damaged to drive, staying inside and using a cell phone to call for help may be safer than standing outside the car, in the flow of traffic. Sgt. Greg VanLeer of the Virginia State Police says if you have flares or triangles, set those out and try to stay away from traffic as much as you can.
